Former Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and his colleagues are urged by National Citizen Party Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam to step out onto the streets to safeguard the accomplishments of the preceding interim government. This call was made by Nahid during a press conference at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport following his return from performing umrah.
The lawmaker representing Dhaka-11 emphasized that individuals such as Prof Yunus and Asif Nazrul, who guided the interim government, need to shoulder responsibility as the BNP government is annulling critical ordinances implemented during their tenure, including one concerning the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Nahid alleged that these ordinances are currently facing cancellation, hindering reforms, while those responsible remain silent and resume their professional endeavors. He stressed that this scenario is unacceptable, stating that they must be accountable to the public.
Nahid expressed disappointment in the BNP, labeling it an “anti-reform party.” He highlighted that post–August 5, expectations for reform politics were high, but the party opted for elections under the old system while advocating for a new constitution and significant reforms. Criticizing the ruling party’s actions, he mentioned that the BNP is disregarding post-election developments after securing a substantial majority.
The NCP convener raised concerns over the BNP annulling key ordinances, including those related to enforced disappearances, the human rights commission, and judicial appointments. He accused the BNP of aiming for an autocratic system and absolute executive authority through these actions.
Nahid asserted that the public has not supported the BNP’s endeavors over the past 16 years due to a lack of confidence in its leadership. He indicated that if parliamentary solutions fail, they will resort to street protests, advocating for the establishment of a constitutional reform council and the conversion of ordinances into laws. He warned that the BNP government would encounter challenges governing amidst an impending economic downturn without the trust of the populace.
