“Bangladesh Faces Looming Driver Shortage Amid Infrastructure Growth”

-

The recently approved national budget for the fiscal year 2026-2027 in Bangladesh continues to emphasize investments in key infrastructure such as roads, bridges, ports, railways, and logistics. While these investments are crucial for economic growth, boosting exports, and positioning the country as a manufacturing and logistics hub, there is a notable oversight in focusing on the workforce that plays a vital role in the movement of goods.

The efficient operation of Bangladesh’s supply chains heavily relies on the drivers of heavy vehicles who transport containers from ports, deliver export shipments, move consignments to economic zones, and distribute goods to domestic markets. However, there is a concerning decline in this workforce as transport operators struggle to recruit and retain skilled drivers for various commercial vehicles, leading to a potential logistics crisis.

The backbone of Bangladesh’s freight system lies in road transport, facilitating the movement of imports, exports, industrial materials, agricultural products, and consumer goods. To enhance the performance of ports, customs operations, inland container depots, and logistics facilities, a focus on skilled drivers is equally essential alongside physical infrastructure improvements.

Despite significant advancements in building transport infrastructure in the past decade, the shortage of qualified drivers poses a significant challenge. The traditional informal apprenticeship system for training drivers is weakening, and younger individuals are less inclined to pursue a career in this field due to various factors like long hours, tough working conditions, and limited career prospects. As experienced drivers retire, there is a notable gap in the workforce for new entrants.

The implications of driver shortages extend beyond transport companies, affecting fleet efficiency, cargo delivery timelines, logistics costs, and supply chain reliability. To address this issue, Bangladesh can learn from other countries like the US, UK, Germany, Japan, and Australia, which have implemented comprehensive strategies including vocational training, enhanced licensing systems, improved working conditions, and technology integration to tackle driver shortages effectively.

In light of these challenges, Bangladesh should develop a strategic approach to address the shortage of professional freight drivers. Establishing a national heavy-vehicle driver development program in collaboration with relevant authorities and industry stakeholders can create structured training pathways, certification mechanisms, and continuous skill enhancement opportunities for drivers. Specialized training centers in key logistics hubs can provide practical instruction on various aspects of heavy vehicle operations and modern logistics requirements.

Additionally, revamping the licensing framework, piloting simulation-based training programs, improving working conditions at truck terminals, and emphasizing the importance of skilled drivers in the national logistics ecosystem are crucial steps to address the shortage effectively. By recognizing professional drivers as strategic assets and investing in their development, Bangladesh can ensure the sustainability and efficiency of its logistics operations in line with its infrastructure growth.

Overall, prioritizing the development and recognition of skilled drivers is essential for Bangladesh to overcome the looming challenge of driver shortages and maximize the returns on its infrastructure investments in the long run.
