“Dhaka University Reflects on Century of Influence”

-

The University of Dhaka (DU) will commemorate its 105th founding anniversary on July 1, 2026, under the theme “Restoration of Democracy and Dhaka University in Higher Education.” This milestone prompts a deep reflection on the institution’s role in national development and political movements over the past century.

DU has been central to pivotal historical events, such as the 1952 Language Movement, the 1971 Liberation War, and various democratic movements. Despite its significant contributions, DU has faced criticism, with recent debates questioning its reputation as a premier educational institution versus being labeled a mere “coaching center” or a “sinking ship.”

In today’s global academic landscape, universities are assessed based on measurable performance indicators by international ranking platforms. DU has actively participated in rankings, entering the QS rankings in 2011 and the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings in 2016. However, DU has often ranked lower in global rankings, highlighting the need for improvement.

Other universities have demonstrated remarkable transformations through strategic reforms and talent acquisition initiatives. By attracting top scholars and implementing rigorous academic standards, institutions like the National University of Singapore and the University of Malaya have significantly improved their global rankings.

To elevate DU’s academic standing, a shift towards leveraging “brain circulation” is essential. Drawing insights from successful talent acquisition programs in Malaysia and China, DU could benefit from initiatives that attract global diaspora back to contribute to its growth.

Moreover, focusing on nurturing the vast pool of talented students at DU can drive innovation and research excellence. By developing robust PhD programs and incentivizing research publication, DU can create a sustainable talent pipeline that contributes to local research and industry.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has acknowledged the need for enhancing research activities at DU. Implementing a talent-driven model inspired by successful Asian universities could invigorate DU’s academic environment and pave the way for sustainable growth.

Dr. M Niaz Asadullah, a professor of economics at Dhaka University and senior fellow at IDEAS in Malaysia, emphasizes the importance of strategic reforms and collaborative efforts to revitalize DU’s academic legacy.
