“Apple’s Storied History: 5 Noteworthy Anecdotes”

-

Apple, the renowned technology powerhouse responsible for the immensely popular iPhone, marks its 50th anniversary on April 1. Since its establishment in 1976, the California-based company has made a significant impact on popular culture and the tech sector. Here are five noteworthy anecdotes from its storied history.

Designer Rob Janoff recalled a succinct directive from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs when tasked with creating a new logo in January 1977: “Don’t make it cute.” Janoff aimed to craft a computer design that was both user-friendly and enjoyable. He incorporated the iconic bite mark to differentiate the apple from other round fruits like cherries, later discovering its dual meaning as a play on the computer term “byte.”

Contrary to rumors, the Apple logo had no ties to the biblical narrative of Adam and Eve or the tragic story of computing pioneer Alan Turing. Janoff revealed that presenting a single solution to a client, as he did with Apple, was a unique occurrence in his career, emphasizing the logo’s perfect fit for the brand.

During the Super Bowl on January 22, 1984, millions of Americans witnessed Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking one-minute Apple advertisement featuring a hammer-wielding athlete demolishing a “Big Brother” figure on a giant screen. Inspired by George Orwell’s novel, the ad announced the debut of the Apple computer, offering a vision of liberation through home computing instead of simply showcasing the product.

Apple has consistently utilized vibrant colors to distinguish its products from competitors. The first-generation iMacs, released in 1998, featured transparent shells in eye-catching hues like blue and green, providing a glimpse into the cutting-edge technology housed within. The iPod music player, initially available in metallic grey, later expanded into a spectrum of bright colors. The introduction of the “rose gold” iPhone 6S in 2015 ignited a trend known as “millennial pink,” inspiring numerous imitations.

Observant viewers of Apple product launches may notice a recurring detail: nearly every screen displays the time as 9:41 am. Former Apple executive Scott Forstall explained that this timing was deliberate, aligning with Steve Jobs’ keynote structure to ensure that the product reveal occurs approximately 40 minutes into the presentation, coinciding with the time displayed on the audience’s watches.

While Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak are commonly recognized as Apple’s co-founders, a lesser-known figure, Ronald Wayne, also played a pivotal role in the company’s inception. Wayne, an engineer at Atari, was responsible for hardware engineering and documentation at Apple’s early stages. However, apprehensive about financial risks, Wayne relinquished his 10% stake in the company just 11 days after its founding for two payments totaling $2,300. This decision cost him a potential stake valued at around $370 billion by 2026.
