US President Donald Trump expressed his frustration once again on Friday towards NATO allies for their reluctance to provide military assistance in securing the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at an investment forum in Miami, Trump criticized their lack of support despite the significant financial contributions the US makes to NATO for their defense. He hinted that the US may reconsider its support for allies who do not reciprocate assistance.
Amid the ongoing US-Israeli operations against Iran, Trump has continuously highlighted the Western allies’ failure to offer military aid to safeguard the crucial Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway, vital for Gulf oil and gas exports, has faced disruptions due to potential threats from Iran, leading to disruptions in global energy supply chains.
While countries like Britain, France, Germany, and Japan have expressed readiness to contribute to efforts in the region, they have not committed any forces yet. Trump has been particularly critical of NATO, branding its members as “COWARDS” and dismissing the alliance’s significance without US involvement.
Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump reiterated that the US does not depend on NATO and criticized the alliance for its perceived inaction against Iran. The escalating tensions in the region have put a spotlight on the strained relationships between the US and its NATO allies regarding security cooperation.
