“Algorithmic Influence: The Impact on Trends and Privacy”

-

In a familiar scenario, have you ever noticed Instagram suggesting reels related to a recent conversation or showing ads for items you intended to purchase? This may lead to thoughts of potential eavesdropping by your phone. While studies have dispelled the myth of an ever-listening microphone, the concern reflects a deeper fear of surveillance and privacy invasion.

Living in today’s reality means existing within algorithms, continuously scrolling through content. From waking up and immediately reaching for our phones to spending hours on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, the average Gen-Z individual scrolls for around six hours daily, sometimes even exceeding 13-15 hours.

The act of scrolling has become a routine, often lacking a clear purpose beyond passing time. Referred to as a “filler” activity, mindless scrolling has led to mental fatigue and shortened attention spans. Our online habits heavily influence our offline preferences, shaping our tastes in fashion, entertainment, hobbies, and more.

The online world dictates trends that impact our daily choices, with social media algorithms playing a significant role. The saying, “You can tell a lot about a person’s screentime by looking at their fit,” highlights the influence of online activity on fashion choices. Trends, from fashion aesthetics to color preferences, rapidly evolve based on online popularity and celebrity endorsements.

Many individuals, like Tarannum Alam, have experienced the impulse to follow trends, influenced by social media content and fast-fashion accessibility. However, trends quickly fade, leading to a continuous cycle of chasing the next big thing. Despite the desire to fit in and avoid missing out, there is a growing awareness of the homogeneity resulting from excessive trend-following.

Efforts to break free from algorithmic influence have led to posts promoting alternatives to mindless scrolling on platforms like Instagram. Yet, even these attempts at disconnecting often fall into the trap of curated content and conformity. Some individuals are now turning to physical media like magazines and catalogues for authentic inspiration, seeking a reset from the overwhelming influence of algorithms.

As more people explore alternatives to digital consumption, there is hope for a shift towards a more authentic and diverse cultural landscape. Embracing physical media for inspiration could provide the much-needed break from the relentless cycle of online trends and algorithmic influence.
