Will Young discusses Bangladesh’s bowling threats & series conditions

-

Will Young, a seasoned player in a relatively inexperienced New Zealand ODI team, faced a 2-1 defeat in a recent three-match series against Bangladesh. Transitioning from a successful India tour to Bangladesh, Young and his team encountered challenging batting conditions and a formidable pace attack. In an exclusive interview with Abdullah Al Mehdi of The Daily Star, Young discussed Bangladesh’s bowling threats and the series conditions:

The Daily Star (DS): How impressive was Nahid Rana in the ODI series?

Will Young (WY): Nahid Rana possesses the potential to become an outstanding bowler – consistently hitting speeds around 150kph even in intense heat. He displays good air movement and bounce, indicating his promise for a successful bowling career.

DS: Coming from a strong India series, how does Bangladesh differ?

WY: While many perceive the subcontinent as a unified entity, India and Bangladesh present distinct challenges. In India, we witnessed an average score of around 300 in ODIs, contrasting with the lower scores here – defending approximately 240 in the initial match. The batting conditions are tougher in Bangladesh, with higher temperatures to acclimatize to.

DS: Is the climate hotter here compared to India?

WY: Yes, the increased sweating and fatigue sensations, possibly due to the time of year or humidity, are noticeable distinctions from our experiences in India earlier this year. Bangladesh boasts a formidable team featuring both seam and spin bowling threats.

DS: Are Bangladesh more dangerous in these conditions or on pace-friendly pitches?

WY: It’s challenging to assess without facing this bowling attack in New Zealand. However, Bangladesh is clearly gearing up for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Considering South African conditions align more closely with New Zealand’s, Bangladesh’s well-balanced squad could pose a significant threat, especially evident in this white-ball series.

DS: In India, you excelled at sweeping. Did you encounter more challenges with sweeps or spinners in Bangladesh?

WY: It depends on the spinner types. India featured Jadeja and Kuldeep, whereas Bangladesh showcases off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz and leg-spinner Rishad Hossain. Various conditions necessitate different sweeping techniques. Our batting unit strategizes sweeps not just for scoring but also to influence field placements and force bowler adjustments.

DS: How do you handle variable bounce approaches here?

WY: Coping with inconsistent bounce can be tricky. Adjustments may involve straight-bat shots for erratic bounce and sweeping for spin. Each situation demands a unique approach, requiring a committed mindset.

DS: Reflecting on your success against Bangladesh previously, how did this series disappoint you personally?

WY: Failing to contribute as desired and losing the series were indeed disappointing. Personal success aligns with team victories for me. Despite the setbacks, valuable lessons emerged for both inexperienced and experienced players. Credit is due to Bangladesh for their exceptional performance.

DS: What challenges did Chattogram present?

WY: Opting to field first in Chattogram proved challenging, as we had minimal exposure to such conditions during the tour. The scorching weather, low pitch, and late-turning wicket posed difficulties. Bangladesh’s bowlers executed exceptionally well in these demanding conditions.

DS: Your involvement in Bangladesh’s famous Test victory at Mount Maunganui?

WY: Securing fifties in both innings while Ebadot Hossain claimed six wickets in the second innings was memorable. Unexpectedly hot conditions challenged our side, emphasizing the importance of assessing conditions better and selecting a versatile squad adaptable to varying circumstances.

DS: Winning the World Test Championship – how significant was it?

WY: The World Test Championship victory held immense importance. Witnessing experienced players like Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Kane Williamson, and Ross Taylor culminate their efforts in winning the championship was well-deserved. It signifies collective success and dedication.

DS: Managing transitions across formats – your perspective?

WY: Transitioning can be complex, but maintaining a consistent mindset focusing on strengths, game reading, and contributing to victories is crucial. Familiarity with Bangladesh from previous visits aids in understanding what works effectively. The diversity of cricket challenges, whether in domestic or county settings, adds excitement.

DS: Ricky Ponting’s observations on New Zealand’s cricket community?

WY: While I hadn’t heard Ponting’s remarks, New Zealand’s tightly knit cricket community thrives on information exchange, healthy competition, and strong relationships. With a limited number of professional cricketers in the domestic circuit, the system benefits from shared experiences and growth opportunities.

DS: Prospects for the 2027 World Cup?

WY: The ongoing tours, featuring a mix of main and emerging players, foster healthy competition. The increasing competition for limited spots presents a positive conundrum for selectors, the captain, and the head coach. The anticipation for the upcoming World Cup adds excitement to the team’s evolving dynamics.
