Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed satisfaction with the government’s recent choice to refrain from accepting duty-free cars and government plots, deeming it a timely and promising decision. TIB has emphasized the necessity for all parliament members and government officials to publicly disclose their income, expenses, and assets annually on online platforms.
In a recent statement, TIB urged the government to implement a comprehensive national anti-corruption strategy to ensure sustainable outcomes. The organization recommended aligning this strategy with key reform proposals such as BNP’s 31-point agenda, the election manifesto, the July charter, and the Anti-Corruption Commission Reform Report.
Iftekharuzzaman, the Executive Director of TIB, highlighted that the fundamental aim of recent movements and national elections was to establish a welfare-centric Bangladesh characterized by good governance, transparency, and integrity. He underscored that preventing corruption is crucial for fulfilling political, economic, social, and cultural pledges to the citizens.
Iftekharuzzaman stressed the importance of elected officials disclosing their and their families’ assets within three months of assuming office and updating this information annually, as mandated by the July charter. He advocated extending this requirement to all government employees remunerated by the state.
Regarding the government’s decision to decline duty-free privileges, Iftekharuzzaman viewed it as an initial stride towards fostering fair governance. He noted that this stance has heightened public expectations for enhanced transparency and accountability within the new administration.
