A man has officially disowned his son by filing a legal document known as an affidavit due to his involvement with the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Jhenaidah. The father, named Abu Zafar, took this action against his son, Md Nahid Hasan Sabuj, aged 24, on March 2. The affidavit was completed at the Jhenaidah District Notary Public office with the help of Advocate Md Sadatur Rahman Hadi.
Sabuj held the position of Joint General Secretary at the Government Keshab Chandra (KC) College branch of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. Even though the organization had been prohibited by the government, his son continued his affiliation with the branch, disregarding his father’s objections. Abu Zafar mentioned that his son was recently involved in activities such as raising national and party flags and showcasing portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina at the deserted district Awami League office on February 21.
Following this incident, Abu Zafar expelled his son from their home and stated that he would not be accountable for any future unlawful activities his son might engage in. A resident of Aaruakandi village, Nasir Uddin, revealed that the family encountered pressure from the authorities after the flag-raising incident. He highlighted the family’s history of being involved in BNP politics and their shift towards the Awami League due to connections with former upazila leader Shahidul Islam Hiron. Nasir mentioned that Zafar resumed BNP politics after the fall of Awami League in 2024.
Efforts to reach Hossain Md Farhad, the president of KC College BCL branch, were unsuccessful. Advocate Md Shafiqul Rahman from Jhenaidah District Judge Court stated that such affidavits do not carry legal weight in matters concerning property rights, implying that the father’s action was possibly a strategy to avoid legal entanglements with the police.
OC Md Shamsul Arefin from Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station confirmed that no legal case had been filed regarding the flag-raising or portrait display at the prohibited Awami League office.
