A passenger has died on board an Air France flight returning from Paris.
Massachusetts state troopers responded to an “unattended death” aboard an Air France flight from the French capital to Boston Logan International Airport on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson from state police. They added: “The matter remains under investigation by the State Police”.
The man had suffered a medical emergency, according to reports. The identity of the person will not be revealed until their loved ones have been informed. The Mirror have approached Air France for comment. Emergency services were seen on the runway at the Boston airport on Tuesday night after the plane had landed.
Last year, a Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing in London after a man tragically died on board following a medical emergency. The flight, from Tirana, Albania, to Manchester Airport, was forced to divert shortly before 8pm on Sunday, November 10, after having already flown over Switzerland and France. Emergency crews met the aircraft after landing and were joined by police, paramedics and an air ambulance. The man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Deaths on commercial flights are thankfully very rare, with estimates for 2021 putting the number at 0.21 deaths per million passengers, with almost all of these resulting from medical issues unrelated to the aircraft. Most in-flight medical emergencies are successfully managed, and flight attendants are trained in first aid and responding to emergencies. More severe medical emergencies may involve a flight landing at the nearest possible destination to seek medical assistance, while announcements are sometimes made to appeals doctors on board to provide additional assistance.
