“Jamaat-e-Islami Criticizes Bangladesh Bank Governor Removal”

-

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shafiqur Rahman criticized the removal of the Bangladesh Bank governor, labeling it as the commencement of a government-supported culture of violence. He emphasized the importance of respecting individuals in positions of authority, stating that demeaning behavior within crucial institutions like the Bangladesh Bank is intolerable.

Rahman highlighted the precarious state of the country’s economy, attributing it to authoritarian governance, widespread corruption, and illegal practices. He cautioned that if such misconduct persists at top governmental levels, including the central bank, it could severely damage the economy.

He urged all segments of society to protest against these irregularities, irrespective of political affiliations, citing a trend of capable officials being unjustly targeted at state institutions. Rahman called on the government to cease such actions immediately if it genuinely aims to establish a fair and democratic Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of appointing qualified individuals based on merit rather than political allegiance.

His statement followed the dismissal of Ahsan H Mansur as the central bank governor and the appointment of Md Mostakur Rahman in his place. This transition had faced opposition from some Bangladesh Bank officials.

Furthermore, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar questioned the selection of the new governor, expressing concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the autonomy of the central bank. Porwar emphasized the critical responsibilities of a central bank governor and criticized the appointment of a businessman with alleged ties to the ruling party.

He stressed the need for meritocracy in leadership positions, especially in times of public demand for systemic change. Porwar raised suspicions about the new governor’s past involvement with the ruling party’s financial affairs and highlighted the importance of unbiased and experienced professionals leading key institutions for Bangladesh’s progress.
