US and Iran Engage in Indirect Talks Amid Nuclear Tensions

-

Today, the United States and Iran engage in indirect discussions in Geneva to address their longstanding nuclear disagreement, amid uncertain prospects for compromise while the US deploys military forces in the area.

According to a source familiar with the situation, US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will join the talks, facilitated by Oman, alongside Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Simultaneously, US military officials are making preparations for potential prolonged operations against Iran if President Donald Trump issues an order to strike, as revealed by two US sources to Reuters.

Iran initiated a military exercise in the vital Strait of Hormuz yesterday, a significant international waterway and crucial oil export route for Gulf Arab nations, who have been advocating for diplomatic solutions to end the conflict.

NUCLEAR TALKS BETWEEN IRAN AND US AMIDST PROTESTS AND WAR CONCERNS

On February 6, Tehran and Washington resumed discussions regarding their longstanding dispute.

Washington and its ally Israel are concerned that Iran seeks to develop a nuclear weapon that could jeopardize Israel’s security. Iran insists its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes, although it has enriched uranium well beyond levels necessary for energy production, approaching the threshold for weapons-grade material.

Iran remains mindful of a previous attempt to revive talks in June last year that was disrupted when Israel, supported by the US, conducted airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Subsequently, Iran declared a suspension of uranium enrichment activities.

In the aftermath, Iran’s leadership faced internal turmoil due to widespread protests against economic hardships exacerbated by international sanctions impacting the country’s oil revenue.

In a notable shift, the US has now positioned what President Trump describes as a substantial naval presence in the region.

While Washington aims to broaden the discussion to include non-nuclear matters like Iran’s missile arsenal, Tehran insists on limiting talks to nuclear restrictions in exchange for easing sanctions, refusing to completely abandon uranium enrichment or engage in missile program negotiations.

During a press briefing in Budapest, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the challenges of reaching an agreement with Iran but expressed the US’s willingness to pursue diplomacy.

Yesterday, Araghchi met with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in Geneva to discuss collaboration with the IAEA and technical aspects ahead of talks with the US.

This afternoon, Witkoff and Kushner are set to engage in trilateral discussions with Russia and Ukraine in an effort to broker an agreement between the two countries and end Moscow’s longstanding intervention in Ukraine, as per the source.
