Police have named Md Rakib, who was captured in a viral video hitting a woman with a stick at Dhaka University last evening, as a suspect in a 2024 murder case in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur. Rakib, enrolled in the Department of World Religions and Culture at the university, is accused of the murder alongside his twin brother, Shakib, as per law enforcement authorities. The duo has been evading law enforcement since the case was registered.
According to Khandkar Nasir Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakoir Police Station, a charge sheet has been filed in connection with the homicide of Sabbir Hossain in Safipur Paschimpara. The incident occurred on September 9, 2024, when Sabbir visited the rooftop of Rakib and Shakib’s residence after a gym session with them. Two local teens who accompanied them to the rooftop left to purchase clothes. Upon their return, they discovered Sabbir lying in a pool of blood near the building. Upon inspecting the rooftop, they found weapons stained with blood, as detailed in the case report.
The victim’s brother, Md Mohiuddin Abir, who lodged the complaint, condemned the lack of police action, citing the freedom of movement enjoyed by the accused despite numerous complaints to the authorities. He claimed that the case was inexplicably transferred to Gazipur Detective Police and no arrest warrants had been issued.
In the recent viral video, depicting an incident from the previous night, two women were subjected to harassment, with one seen crying and demanding justice after being struck by Rakib. In response, the Dhaka University administration has established a three-member investigative panel.
Kaliakoir OC Nasir mentioned, “The case has been under investigation by the DB Police, hence they share the responsibility for apprehending him if a court-issued arrest warrant is issued.” Gazipur Detective Police’s OC Hasmat Ullah acknowledged that no arrest operation had been carried out due to various constraints, but assured that actions will be taken promptly.
