At least nine individuals sustained injuries and a residence was engulfed in flames following violent incidents in five districts post-election on Saturday. Among the wounded were six individuals involved in clashes between two groups of BNP supporters in Natore’s Lalpur upazila during the night. The altercation stemmed from Farzana Sharmin Putul, who contested and won the election with party backing, and Taiful Islam Tipu, an independent candidate and former BNP assistant office secretary. Reports from locals and law enforcement indicated escalating tensions between the factions leading up to the polls, culminating in a clash at Walia Bazar around 9:00 pm on Saturday. Md Mojibar Rahman, the officer-in-charge of Lalpur Police Station, confirmed that six people were injured in the confrontation, resulting in two arrests and the confiscation of a firearm at the scene, with subsequent legal action taken. Harunur Rashid Pappu, an associate of Putul, alleged that their group was targeted by adversaries, although attempts to reach Tipu for comment were unsuccessful. Tipu, however, refuted the allegations during a recent press briefing, asserting that his supporters were facing mistreatment from BNP loyalists.
In Sherpur’s Sadar upazila, a BNP activist was reportedly assaulted by Jamaat supporters at night, leaving the individual, identified as Giasuddin Rasel, injured. Rasel, who served as an election agent for BNP’s unsuccessful candidate in Sherpur-1, Sansila Jebrin Priyanka, was allegedly attacked while returning home from Juglikura area, according to his wife, Kamrun Nahar Kalpana. The victim was admitted to Sherpur General Hospital for treatment, although the Jamaat MP-elect for the constituency denied any involvement, dismissing the claims as propaganda. Meanwhile, in Feni’s Daganbhuyan, a Jamaat follower was purportedly assaulted by BNP affiliates in Dakkhin Bhabanipur village around noon on Saturday. The victim, identified as Nurul Absar Belal, was attacked at his residence and subsequently hospitalized. District BNP Convener Sheikh Farid acknowledged reports of violence and indicated plans for organizational measures against those responsible, while Feni police superintendent Shafiqul Islam affirmed that legal actions would be taken following investigations.
In Jamalpur, a journalist sustained injuries in an attack allegedly carried out by a Jubo Dal leader on Saturday for reporting on post-election violence in Dewanganj upazila. The victim, identified as Shamsul Huda Ratan, president of Dewanganj Press Club and correspondent for the daily Inqilab, recounted the incident, stating that he intended to file a complaint with police. However, the accused, Faruk Ahmed, discredited the allegation as unfounded. OC Monsur Ahmed of Dewanganj Model Police Station acknowledged awareness of the incident but noted the absence of any formal complaints. Lastly, in Khulna, a group set fire to the residence of Shokor Akunji, a Jamaat supporter, in Mashiali village under Phultala upazila on Saturday night. Shokor’s son, Abdur Razzak, expressed uncertainty about the attackers’ identities. A general diary was lodged with the Khan Jahan Ali Police Station in connection with the incident.
