Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has criticized the BNP-led government for selecting party-connected individuals as administrators for six city corporations, stating that the decision goes against the public’s wishes. According to a statement released by the party’s central publicity department, Porwar expressed dissatisfaction with the appointments made by the Local Government Division on February 22 for Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation, Khulna City Corporation, Sylhet City Corporation, Narayanganj City Corporation, and Gazipur City Corporation. Porwar argued that these appointments reflect the government’s lack of consideration for the people’s desires.
He mentioned that the July uprising aimed to establish a fair and democratic social system, complete the trial of the massacre, and carry out necessary reforms. Porwar noted that the 13th parliamentary election and a subsequent referendum were steps toward achieving this objective, with citizens expecting local government positions to be filled through fair elections. The statement also mentioned positive signals from the Election Commission about the upcoming local government elections.
Porwar criticized the government’s actions as ethically questionable and potentially misleading to the public. He cautioned that it could raise suspicions of a plan to delay local elections or manipulate the electoral process. Porwar demanded the withdrawal of the appointments of party-linked administrators and urged the immediate release of election schedules for city corporations and all other local government levels.
