Motorcycle-riding assailants carried out a brutal attack on three villages in a central region of Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of at least 46 individuals, as reported by a humanitarian source to AFP on Saturday. The incident once again highlights the security challenges facing Nigeria, which have drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump.
According to a security report obtained by AFP, the attackers utilized a total of 41 motorcycles, each carrying two or three individuals. The villages targeted are located within the Borgu local government area in Niger State, bordering Kwara State, where a recent jihadist assault claimed over 160 lives.
The deadliest assault occurred in Konkoso village, where 38 individuals were either shot or had their throats slit, as per the anonymous humanitarian source. Many houses in the village were also set ablaze, with additional casualties yet to be accounted for.
A resident from Konkoso revealed that the assailants first struck Tungar Makeri village before moving on to their village. The police spokesperson for Niger State confirmed that six individuals lost their lives in Tungan Makeri during the attack, with houses set on fire and several people reportedly abducted.
The Konkoso resident shared the tragic news that his nephew was among the victims of the attack. Police authorities are actively investigating the incidents in the other two villages to gather more information.
