“UN Chief Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Sudan Conflict”

-

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed a strong dedication to urging for an urgent halt to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has endured almost three years of civil war. The Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a fierce battle for control of the nation since April 2023.

This conflict has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of individuals and the displacement of over 11 million people from their homes, leading to what the UN has labeled as the most severe humanitarian crisis globally.

Guterres highlighted the active efforts of the United Nations in collaboration with the African Union, the Arab League, the Quad, and other significant stakeholders to apply effective pressure for an immediate ceasefire. Addressing reporters during an African Union summit in Ethiopia, he emphasized the importance of establishing conditions to exert pressure on the conflicting parties.

Moreover, Guterres underscored the necessity of addressing foreign entities that are providing support and weaponry to both sides of the conflict, including actors within and outside the African continent.
