Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Brontë’s iconic gothic romance raked in $11 million from 3,682 theaters on its opening day. Projections indicate that the movie could amass up to $40 million domestically during the extended President’s Day weekend, with international earnings expected to match this figure, marking a successful start for the $80 million production.
The plot revolves around the illicit romance between Cathy, portrayed by Margot Robbie, and Heathcliff, played by Jacob Elordi. The talented cast also includes Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Shazad Latif, Martin Clunes, and Ewan Mitchell, with original music by Charli XCX enhancing the soundtrack.
Sony’s animated flick “GOAT” debuted in second place, bringing in $7.1 million from 3,863 locations. The family-friendly film, backed by NBA star Stephen Curry, is anticipated to gross around $25 million over the holiday period, with Caleb McLaughlin headlining the voice cast.
Meanwhile, Amazon MGM’s heist thriller “Crime 101” entered the charts at third place with earnings of $3.9 million from 3,161 theaters, with a projected total of $13.8 million over the extended weekend.
In the rankings, Sam Raimi’s “Send Help” secured the fourth spot with $1.8 million, followed by “Solo Mio” at fifth place with $1.4 million.
