Violence Erupts Post-Election, One Dead, Several Injured

-

One individual lost their life and five others sustained injuries in different instances of violence post-election from Friday evening up to last night across five districts. The deceased, Osman Sardar, aged 29, supported an independent candidate in Bagerhat-2 and lived in Paronowapara village in Bagerhat Sadar upazila.

According to the victim’s elder brother, a clash erupted between supporters of the BNP-nominated candidate and a rebel candidate at Chitabari village on Friday evening. Osman was struck on the head with sharp objects during the altercation and was later pronounced dead at Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Officials from the Bagerhat BNP chapter denied involvement in the incident, suggesting it may have stemmed from internal conflicts among the independent candidate’s supporters. The Bagerhat Additional Superintendent of Police confirmed the fatality and reported the detention of one person, with plans to file a case the following day.

In a separate incident in Feni’s Daganbhuiyan upazila, a Jamaat-e-Islami activist was injured in an attack by BNP members, leading to the death of his mother. The injured activist, who had recently returned from the UAE, was campaigning for the Jamaat-nominated candidate when he was assaulted and subsequently hospitalized.

The newly elected BNP lawmaker from Feni-3 expressed condolences for the loss and vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable. Police in Feni confirmed the death and stated that a case had been lodged in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, in Pabna’s Boraigram upazila, clashes between BNP and Jamaat activists resulted in injuries to two individuals and damage to several homes. Tensions had been escalating between the groups following the election, as confirmed by the local police.

In Sunamganj, a leader of the Jatiya Jubo Shakti sustained injuries in an assault by unidentified assailants and is currently receiving medical care at the district hospital. The incident, which occurred late Friday night, is under investigation by the local police.

In Netrokona’s Purbadhala upazila, a Jubo Dal leader was injured in a clash between BNP and Jamaat supporters following the victory of the latter’s candidate in the election. The injured leader filed a police complaint, as reported by the OC of Purbadhala Police Station.

Lastly, in Jashore Sadar, a bus belonging to the election coordinator of a BNP candidate was set on fire in the early hours of Saturday. The bus owner, who was associated with the newly elected BNP lawmaker, is currently under investigation by the local police.
