Foreign leaders, such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar, and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, have extended their congratulations to the BNP and its Chairman Tarique Rahman for their significant win in the 13th parliamentary elections. They have expressed their commitment to collaborating with the new leadership of Bangladesh to enhance bilateral relationships and promote mutual development objectives.
Modi was the first foreign leader to reach out to Tarique following the BNP’s victory, securing 212 parliamentary seats out of 299 in the notable election held 18 months after the July uprising. Modi conveyed his best wishes and support to Tarique in fulfilling the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people. He emphasized India’s dedication to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both nations based on their close historical and cultural ties.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also congratulated the BNP and Tarique, expressing eagerness to work with the newly elected government to advance regional prosperity and security. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised the Bangladeshi people for their democratic triumph at the ballot box and commended Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for overseeing a smooth transition process.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated their nation’s unwavering support for democratic collaboration and shared progress with Bangladesh. Tarique and Shehbaz had a phone conversation, during which Shehbaz extended an invitation for Tarique to visit Pakistan, reciprocated by Tarique.
Leaders from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan, the UK, and the US, among others, also sent their well-wishes and congratulations to Tarique and the people of Bangladesh for their democratic endorsement. They expressed readiness to strengthen ties, enhance cooperation, and work together towards common objectives for the benefit of both nations.
China acknowledged Bangladesh’s successful general election and congratulated the BNP and Tarique. The Chinese embassy in Dhaka expressed readiness to collaborate with the new Bangladeshi government to further strengthen bilateral relations and advance cooperation. China aims to support Bangladesh’s domestic political agenda and deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation in various fields.
The UK High Commission in Bangladesh and other leaders, including Mamata Banerjee and Mallikarjun Kharge, also joined in extending their congratulations to Tarique and the BNP, signaling a positive outlook for future collaboration on shared priorities such as economic growth, migration, climate initiatives, and security measures.
