“Jatiya Party Suffers Historic Defeat in Elections”

-

The recent elections on February 12 dealt a severe blow to the Jatiya Party, marking a significant downturn for the party. This election outcome saw a complete wipeout, with not a single candidate from the party managing to secure a seat. This unprecedented defeat, the first of its kind since the reinstatement of parliamentary democracy, has raised concerns about the party’s future prospects among political observers.

Out of the 196 candidates fielded by the Jatiya Party, only 20 managed to retain their deposits, showcasing a dismal performance compared to major competitors like the BNP, Islami Andolon Bangladesh, and Jamaat-e-Islami. The party, established by HM Ershad, also suffered a major setback in Rangpur, a region traditionally considered its stronghold. The party’s previous lowest seat count was in 2024, where it secured only 11 seats.

Key figures within the party, including Chairman GM Quader and Secretary General Shamim Haider Patwary, faced defeat in their constituencies, finishing third behind Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP candidates. The party’s struggles have been attributed to a disconnection with the public and a diminishing political identity. Analysts suggest that aligning closely with the ruling Awami League for nearly two decades has diluted the Jatiya Party’s distinctiveness, distancing it from the electorate.

The decline of the Jatiya Party has also been linked to its leader-centric approach and the departure of supporters to other political factions over the years. The party’s alliance with the Awami League and the absence of major parties in the recent polls further exacerbated its electoral challenges. Additionally, the emergence of separate parties by heavyweight Jatiya Party leaders ahead of the election added to the party’s complexity.

Historically, the Jatiya Party has maintained close ties with the Awami League, supporting each other in various elections. However, recent developments indicate a significant decline in the party’s influence and organizational strength, leading some analysts to suggest an existential crisis for the Jatiya Party. The party’s leadership has acknowledged the need for introspection and revitalization to address the current challenges it faces.
