“Violence Erupts After Elections in Jhenaidah, 24 Injured”

At least 24 individuals sustained injuries during five separate episodes of violence following the recent elections in Jhenaidah, as per police reports covering the period from last night until midday today. The incidents involved the destruction of election camps, residences of supporters, and an office of the press club in various upazilas including Shailkupa, Jhenaidah Sadar, Maheshpur, and Kaliganj.

The most severe confrontation occurred at approximately 9:00am in Shrirampur village within the Tribeni union of Shailkupa upazila. The clash involved supporters of two local BNP leaders, Madhu Molla and Tapan, resulting in at least 13 injuries. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Humayun Kabir Molla from Shailkupa Police Station confirmed the deployment of law enforcement to the scene. He mentioned that a few individuals sustained minor injuries and were subsequently treated at nearby hospitals. Leaders from both factions were summoned to the police station for further discussions.

Similarly, OC Md Jellal Hossain from Kaliganj Police Station reported two separate incidents in the region, resulting in injuries to three individuals in one case and four in another. In Naldanga union under Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, clashes and property damage occurred as rival supporters engaged in confrontations at multiple sites, leading to several injuries.

OC Md Shamsul Arefin of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station affirmed the incidents, indicating that the current situation has stabilized. Additionally, last night, unidentified assailants targeted the Jhenaidah Press Club office near the Upazila Parishad Complex in Maheshpur.

Acknowledging the reported incidents and suggesting that the injury count could exceed 24, Jhenaidah’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Sheikh Billal Hossain mentioned that both police and army personnel have inspected the affected areas. He emphasized the continuous vigilance of security forces, warning of stringent actions against any individuals attempting to instigate further disturbances.
