Tragic Deaths Mar Voting Day in Bangladesh

At least four individuals have passed away due to health issues at or near voting stations in four different districts during the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum today. The fatalities occurred in Khulna, Manikganj, Kishoreganj, and Brahmanbaria.

In Khulna, a BNP leader, Mahibuzzaman Kachi, lost his life after falling ill following a confrontation with a Jamaat activist outside the Alia Madrasa polling center on Khan Jahan Ali Road around 7:45 am. The city unit BNP accused the Jamaat activist, Abdur Rashid Miah, of pushing Kachi after a dispute over soliciting votes. Kachi was pronounced dead at Khulna City Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, in Kishoreganj, a man named Razzak Miah, 55, reportedly died after being pursued by law enforcement near a polling station in Bhairab upazila. Witnesses claimed that Razzak collapsed while trying to flee from the scene after law enforcers dispersed the crowd near the polling center. He was taken to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead upon arrival.

In Manikganj, an elderly man named Babu Mia, 70, passed away while waiting in line to vote at Mahadevpur Government Primary School Center in Shivalaya upazila. He was a van driver and a local resident, confirmed by the polling station’s Presiding Officer and the Mahadevpur Union Parishad Chairman.

Lastly, in Brahmanbaria, a polling officer, Mozahidul Islam, 48, died at Syed Sirazul Islam Auditorium polling center in Sarail upazila. Mozahidul, a madrasa teacher assigned as a polling officer, fell unconscious shortly after the voting commenced. He was rushed to Sarail Upazila Health Complex, where he was pronounced dead due to a stroke.
