The organization’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index revealed that the United States received its lowest-ever score, reflecting a deteriorating situation. Additionally, the global average score recorded by TI reached its lowest point in over a decade.
Since his return to office early last year, US President Donald Trump has significantly impacted both domestic and foreign affairs, exerting pressure on various institutions such as universities and the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, is currently facing scrutiny from the Department of Justice for resisting the president’s demands to lower interest rates.
Transparency International expressed unease over the US government’s actions that appear to target independent voices and undermine judicial independence. The watchdog specifically raised concerns about the temporary halt and weakening enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, indicating a tolerance for corrupt business practices. Furthermore, the reduction in overseas aid by the Trump administration has been cited as weakening global anti-corruption efforts, according to TI.
