Zverev Acknowledges Challenge in Chasing Alcaraz, Sinner

-

World number three, Alexander Zverev, acknowledged on Saturday that he faces a significant challenge in catching up to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. The 28-year-old German ended the 2025 season with just one title in Munich due to various injury setbacks. Despite securing the number three ranking, Zverev trails behind Alcaraz and Sinner by over 6,000 ranking points.

Speaking in Sydney during the United Cup, Zverev recognized the considerable lead held by the top two players, noting that he has ground to cover. Reflecting on his past season, Zverev highlighted his physical struggles and disappointing performances at Grand Slam events and the ATP Finals. Despite these setbacks, he views 2025 as a step forward given the challenges he faced.

Zverev faced both physical and mental health issues throughout the season, taking a break after an early exit at Wimbledon to regroup and refocus. This period served as a turning point for him, allowing for a fresh perspective as he prepares for the 2026 season.

The German star is currently leading Germany at the United Cup before gearing up for the Australian Open, where he aims to contend for a coveted Grand Slam title. Unlike his competitors, Sinner and Alcaraz, who have opted for an exhibition match in South Korea ahead of the Australian Open, Zverev emphasizes the need for a proper preparation tournament to hit his stride effectively.
