“Van Dijk Stresses Meritocracy: Salah Must Earn Spot”

-

Liverpool’s skipper, Virgil van Dijk, emphasized that the recent decision to keep Mohamed Salah on the bench for successive Premier League matches highlights the team’s meritocratic approach, indicating that every player must earn their spot based on current performance rather than past achievements. Salah, the Egyptian winger aged 33, did not feature in Liverpool’s recent victory over West Ham United and only came on as a substitute in the match against Sunderland.

Despite signing a contract extension in April, Salah has struggled to replicate his previous form, with just five goals in 19 appearances across all competitions this season. Van Dijk stated, “It’s not about past glories; everyone needs to deliver consistently.” While acknowledging Salah’s past contributions, he supported the manager’s decision, emphasizing the team’s collective goal for success.

Currently positioned ninth in the league, Liverpool has accumulated 22 points in 14 games, trailing the league leaders by 11 points. The team’s lackluster performance contrasts with their significant investment of £446 million ($594.52 million) in the recent transfer window. Van Dijk underscored the necessity of having Salah performing at his peak, recognizing his pivotal role in the club’s success and urging for continued support for the player.

Salah’s talent and history of success at Liverpool are acknowledged, with Van Dijk expressing confidence in the player’s capability to contribute significantly to the team’s future endeavors.
