Russia’s Drone Assault Causes Power Outages in Ukraine

-

Russia conducted a large-scale drone assault on energy and gas transport infrastructure in six Ukrainian regions overnight, resulting in three fatalities and over 100,000 individuals losing access to power, as per Ukrainian authorities. The Russian military inflicted significant harm to gas transport systems in the Poltava region and targeted equipment at a critical substation in Sumy, according to the energy ministry’s communication on the Telegram platform. The assaults led to power outages affecting over 100,000 residents in Poltava, Sumy, and Chernihiv, noted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Primary gas production sites in Ukraine are situated in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions, with Kharkiv experiencing strikes as well. Additionally, the regions of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk were targeted overnight, as reported by the energy ministry. Despite the attempts by US President Donald Trump to mediate in the Ukrainian conflict, Russia has intensified attacks on gas production and import infrastructure in recent weeks.

The energy ministry denounced the Russian assaults as part of a deliberate strategy to dismantle Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure preceding the winter season. Concurrently, the Kremlin commended US peace efforts in Ukraine, highlighting the significance of this month’s US-Russia summit in Alaska. However, the Kremlin expressed disapproval of European proposals regarding security assurances for Kyiv, maintaining Russia’s stance against the deployment of Nato troops in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force disclosed that out of the 95 drones launched by Russia overnight, 74 were successfully intercepted, and 21 drones struck nine different locations across the country. Following earlier missile attacks by Russia causing a 40 percent decline in gas production, Ukraine has been grappling with a severe gas shortage. The energy ministry revealed that energy facilities had been targeted 2,900 times since March 2025. The assault on the Poltava region temporarily disrupted power supplies, which have now been reinstated, stated Governor Volodymyr Kohut via the Telegram messaging app.

Ukraine condemned Russia’s intention to withdraw from the Council of Europe’s treaty on torture prevention, interpreting it as an implicit acknowledgment of guilt by Moscow.
