A recent report from Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) highlighted widespread breaches of the electoral code of conduct during the run-up to the February 12 elections, with authorities failing to effectively enforce fair competition. Despite an initially positive tone at the start of campaigning, political parties and candidates reverted to traditional conflicts and violence within their ranks.
TIB’s Executive Director, Iftekharuzzaman, expressed concerns about potential instability due to election-related violence and efforts by past authoritarian forces to discourage voting. These findings were unveiled at a presentation of the study titled “Pre-election and Referendum situation: TIB’S Observation,” conducted by Iftekharuzzaman and TIB researcher Mahfuzul Haque.
The study revealed numerous violations, such as early campaign activities violating election laws by displaying promotional materials in prohibited areas. A significant percentage of candidates exceeded expenditure limits, with many failing to adhere to Election Commission directives to remove campaign materials. Candidates extensively utilized social media to influence voters through manipulated content.
Media bias was also noted, with certain political parties receiving disproportionately more coverage than others. Furthermore, the report criticized the nomination process, citing instances of cash payments to voters and officials, as well as inadequate verification of candidates’ financial disclosures.
Regarding the referendum on governance structure reform, conflicting positions between major political parties and the interim government complicated matters. The TIB emphasized the importance of all stakeholders, including the Election Commission, government bodies, law enforcement, and political parties, fulfilling their roles to ensure a fair electoral process.
Iftekharuzzaman stressed the need for equal opportunities for all voters, emphasizing the importance of ensuring safety for marginalized groups. He urged political parties to respect the people’s voting rights and adhere to legal norms to facilitate a transparent and peaceful election and referendum process.
