“Bangladesh Government to Drop 23,865 Politically Motivated Cases”

-

The temporary government has proposed dropping 23,865 cases deemed politically motivated and initiated during the Awami League administration, potentially providing relief to around 500,000 individuals. These cases, registered between January 6, 2009, and August 5, 2024, targeted members of several political groups such as BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Hefazat-e-Islam, and Gano Odhikar Parishad, as stated in a statement from the Ministry of Law.

To streamline the withdrawal procedure, on September 22, 2024, the temporary government established district-level committees under deputy commissioners and an inter-ministerial committee led by Law Adviser Asif Nazrul. The inter-ministerial committee invited political parties to submit requests for the withdrawal of alleged harassment cases brought forward by the previous government.

After assessing applications from the affected parties, the committee reviewed the cases in 39 separate meetings. A total of 23,865 cases have been advised for withdrawal following this assessment, with the press release noting that the process of evaluating applications and suggesting additional withdrawals is ongoing.
