Singapore’s Minister David Neo expressed regret for his comments labeling Hong Kong football players and fans as “idiots” following a crucial 2027 Asian Cup qualifier. The remarks drew backlash and somewhat overshadowed Singapore’s 2-1 victory in Hong Kong, securing their first entry into the prestigious competition since 1984.
Neo praised the Singapore team for their performance during the game, hailing the outcome as “fantastic” in a video shared by one of the players on Instagram. He acknowledged the pressure they faced from both the fans and players in Hong Kong, referring to them as “idiots,” but commended his team for playing like “lions.”
As the acting minister for culture, community, and youth, Neo later expressed remorse for his comments, admitting that he should have shown more respect. Responding to criticism on Instagram, he retracted his statements, acknowledging the toughness of the Hong Kong team and the support from their fans, emphasizing the need to respect their passion and also rally behind the Singapore Lions.
Although the Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comments, both Neo and Hong Kong’s football association refrained from further remarks on the issue. Singapore’s national football team is commonly referred to as the Lions.
