The primary advocacy group in Israel pushing for the release of hostages detained in Gaza has pointed fingers at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the main barrier to the captives’ freedom. This statement came shortly after Netanyahu accused Hamas leaders of prolonging the conflict.
In a released statement, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum emphasized that Netanyahu was the key hindrance to resolving the hostage situation and putting an end to the ongoing conflict. They referenced Israel’s recent strike on a Hamas meeting in Qatar as evidence, stating, “Every time a potential agreement nears, Netanyahu obstructs it.”
Netanyahu, in an earlier address, proclaimed that eliminating Hamas leaders in Qatar would result in the war’s conclusion, alleging that the group had thwarted previous attempts to secure a ceasefire. He criticized the Hamas leaders residing in Qatar, accusing them of prolonging the conflict at the expense of Gaza’s residents.
Contrary to Netanyahu’s claims, the forum dismissed his accusations as another attempt to deflect responsibility for the hostages’ situation. They urged an end to delays and excuses, warning that further delays could endanger the lives of the remaining hostages and hinder the recovery of those who have perished.
Following an attack by Palestinian militants, led by Hamas, on October 7, 2023, where 251 individuals were abducted, 47 hostages remain in Gaza, with the military confirming 25 deaths among them.
Reports from Tel Aviv indicated that thousands of Israelis gathered on Saturday evening, urging the government to resolve the conflict and secure the safe return of the hostages.
