Actor Mark Williams, known for his role as the much-loved clergyman in Father Brown, has shared an amusing mishap that occurred during the production of series 12.
Discussing the new series, which premiered on BBC One last week, the 65-year-old mentioned something he felt he was missing out on while working on the popular period crime drama.
Set in the quaint backdrop of the fictional Cotswold village of Kembleford in the early 1950s, the show demands authentic settings, attire, and classic motors as Father Brown attempts to solve a number of crimes.
The lead actor shared his particular enthusiasm for the vintage cars featured on set, while sharing the proximity of filming locations to Birmingham and Coventry, historic hubs of British car manufacturing. Mark expressed the “chief joys” of shooting the series, which included access to “the amazing pieces of machinery we get”.
But despite his love and passion for classic vehicles, Mark’s character does not drive. Instead, he gets around on his famous bike.
However, this caused an issue when travelling around on set, which led him to have an accident. Describing what happened, the actor shared his story with the BBC.
He said: “Driving on gravel is my main problem, and a lot of the big houses we film at have gravel drives. I once had to cycle in pursuit of a baddie and hit some deep gravel.
“We shot the scene in front of a hotel and I ended up coming to an ungraceful stop. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get off in time so I fell off sideways.
He added: “A young lad in the hotel kitchen saw me keel over and collapsed in laughter. I was very happy to give that lad the best laugh of his week.”
Crime drama Father Brown first aired on BBC Daytime in 2013 and has since become a global success with 130 episodes made so far. The 11th series of Father Brown concluded with an average of 2.5 million viewers tuning in. As well as being a hit in the UK, the show has received international success and is viewed by audiences in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, India, Italy, France, Denmark, Finland, to name a few.
Not only this, but fans who love the series are in for another treat as the show has also been recommissioned for 13th series on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
