“Deadly Drone Strike Escalates Conflict in Crimea”

-

The leader of the government supported by the Kremlin in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia, attributed a deadly drone attack to Ukraine, while Ukraine claimed that three people were killed in a Russian assault in the southeastern part of the country.

Sergey Aksyonov alleged that the Ukrainian military directed the drone strike at the Crimean town of Foros, causing damage to a sanatorium and a school building. He reported on Telegram that three individuals lost their lives and 16 sustained injuries due to the UAV strike. A fire near Yalta was ignited by fragments from the downed drone, Aksyonov added.

The Russian defense ministry labeled the incident as a “terrorist attack” and initially stated that two people had perished. Ukraine asserted that Russia had conducted 46 airstrikes on its soil by 10:00 pm (1900 GMT) on Sunday.

According to Kyiv, Russian strikes during the night in Zaporizhzhia led to the deaths of three individuals and injuries to two others, with one in critical condition. Ivan Fedorov, the head of the regional military administration, mentioned that Russian forces had released at least five bombs on the city.

In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, aiming for Kyiv and Western nations to acknowledge the peninsula as part of its territory. Ukrainian forces frequently launch attacks on the heavily fortified area, including targeting a bridge connecting it to the Russian mainland.

Following significant discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month, US President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine would not be able to regain control of Crimea through a peace agreement. Progress toward a ceasefire has halted since the recent diplomatic engagements, which also involved a separate meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
