Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have joined as executive producers for the award-winning Palestinian short film “I’m Glad You’re Dead Now,” which recently won the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Palme d’Or. The 13-minute drama, written, directed, and co-starring Tawfeek Barhom, is a collaborative effort between Palestine, France, and Greece. Alongside Ashraf Barhom, the film follows the story of two brothers who revisit their childhood island, unearthing deep-seated tensions and concealed secrets from their past.

Phoenix commended the film for its emotional intensity, stating, “This movie addresses memory, trauma, and reconciliation with a sense of immediacy and importance for our times. I am proud to be associated with its future.” Mara shared his sentiments, expressing, “The emotional depth and impactful storytelling of ‘I’m Glad You’re Dead Now’ resonated with me from the start. It is a privilege to support Tawfeek’s vision and the film’s journey ahead.”

Barhom conveyed his appreciation for their backing, saying, “I am profoundly touched by the decision of Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix to endorse this film and its narrative. Their faith in the film’s essence is a tribute, and their creative input will be invaluable as we bring ‘I’m Glad You’re Dead Now’ to broader audiences.” Phoenix and Mara are set to assist in promoting the film through appearances at festivals, media engagements, and strategic partnerships to enhance its reach.

The film is a production collaboration between Kidam from France and Foss Productions from Greece. Kidam, recognized for “Zero F*** Given” premiered at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2021, and Foss Productions has been involved in projects like Suntan, Pity, and Echoes of the Past. The production team comprises Tawfeek Barhom, Akis Polizos, Stylianos Kotionis, and Alexandre Perrier.

“I’m Glad You’re Dead Now” is scheduled to be showcased at the upcoming Doha Film Festival later this month, marking a significant stride towards gaining more recognition in the global festival arena.
