“High Court Orders Security Review for Judges Nationwide”

-

The High Court has instructed the Supreme Court registrar general to establish a committee that will evaluate the security measures in place for judges and their families at courthouses and residences nationwide. The committee is required to submit a report within 90 days. Additionally, the court has issued a directive for the relevant authorities to justify why the lack of proper security for judges should not be deemed unlawful.

This directive and rule were issued by the HC bench consisting of Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi and Justice Raziuddin Ahmed in response to a writ petition filed by Md Mehedi Hasan from Thakurgaon. The petition was filed seeking necessary guidance in light of the tragic murder of a judge’s son in Rajshahi.

The incident involved the fatal stabbing of Tawshif Rahman Sumon, the son of Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman, at their residence on November 13. Tasmin Nahar, the judge’s wife, was also critically injured during the attack.

Following the petition filed on November 16 as a public interest litigation by Mehedi Hasan through lawyer Omar Faruk, the HC was urged to intervene and ensure adequate security measures for all lower court judges and their families nationwide.

During the hearing, Advocate Omar Faruk represented the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Md Mehedi Hasan appeared on behalf of the state.
