“WhatsApp Introduces ‘Strict Account Settings’ for Enhanced Cyber Protection”

-

WhatsApp has introduced a new security enhancement named ‘Strict Account Settings’ to provide increased protection against advanced cyber threats for individuals at high risk. This feature, found in the app’s privacy settings (Settings > Privacy > Advanced), allows users to easily activate the most stringent security configurations with a single click. When enabled, it restricts media and attachments from unfamiliar sources, turns off link previews, and mutes calls from contacts not saved in the user’s address book. WhatsApp highlighted that these measures aim to counter tactics used by sophisticated hackers for surveillance.

Although all conversations are already safeguarded by end-to-end encryption by default, this additional security mode is tailored for users such as journalists or public figures who may encounter targeted risks. By opting for this setting, users can enhance their security but may experience limitations on certain app features.

The deployment of this feature will be phased globally in the upcoming weeks, as per official sources. Additionally, WhatsApp mentioned that it has integrated the Rust programming language into its backend systems to fortify defenses against spyware and other forms of exploitation.
