Bangladesh achieved their highest-ever score against Australia in Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs) but failed to challenge the seven-time world champions, suffering a comprehensive 10-wicket defeat in their fifth match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 in Visakhapatnam, India on Thursday.
Sobhana Mostary’s unbeaten 66 off 80 balls and Rubya Haider Jhelik’s resilient 44 led Bangladesh to a total of 198-9 after choosing to bat first.
However, Australia quickly dashed any hopes of a competitive match as openers Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield put on an undefeated 202-run partnership to secure victory in just 24.5 overs. Healy scored an unbeaten 113 off 77 balls with 20 boundaries, while Litchfield finished not out on 84.
With this win, Australia became the first team to secure a spot in the semifinals, accumulating nine points from five matches.
The significant defeat virtually extinguished Bangladesh’s slim chances of reaching the semifinals, leaving them in sixth place on the table with only two points from five games.
Prior to this match, Bangladesh had faced Australia four times in WODIs, with their previous best score being 135-6, achieved in their inaugural encounter during the 2022 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand.
Bangladesh had a promising start, reaching 73-1 within 18 overs, largely due to Rubya’s performance. However, spinners Ashleigh Gardner and Alana King each claimed two wickets, leading to a collapse in the middle-order.
Sobhana Mostary’s second half-century of the tournament and an unbroken 33-run partnership for the last wicket with Fariha Trisna propelled Bangladesh close to the 200-run mark.
Facing the absence of injured pacers Marufa Akter and left-arm spinner Nahida Akter, Bangladesh’s bowling lacked bite. Additionally, their fielding was subpar, allowing Australia to secure their fifth WODI victory over Bangladesh effortlessly, highlighting the vast difference between the two teams.
