“Arson and Bombs Rock Country Amid Political Turmoil”

-

Arson and homemade bomb attacks persisted in various regions across the country yesterday, with a notable incident involving the burning of a Grameen Bank office in Magura. These incidents occurred following the recent sentencing of the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her former home minister to death by the International Crimes Tribunal-1.

The Awami League, currently facing political activity restrictions, has initiated lockdown and shutdown programs. Over the past week, there have been at least 50 arson attacks, primarily targeting buses, and numerous crude bomb explosions reported nationwide.

In Magura, criminals set ablaze the Grameen Bank office in Mohammapur upazila in the early hours of yesterday. The branch, adjacent to Aminur Rahman Degree College in the upazila, suffered damage as miscreants poured petrol through the window and ignited the fire, causing destruction to official documents and office furniture.

Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene and managed to extinguish the fire. Police authorities, led by Abdur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, were dispatched to assess the situation. An investigation will be conducted to evaluate the extent of the losses incurred.

In Bogura, three crude bomb-like objects were discovered in front of the Grameen Bank’s Mathurapur branch office in Dhunat Upazila. Dhunat Police Station OC Saidul Islam confirmed the finding, noting that the objects remained unattended until the previous evening.

In Dhaka, a crude bomb detonated on the court premises, aimed at the office of the Metropolitan Public Prosecutor. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the incident. Additionally, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) uncovered six crude bombs from a residence in the Darus Salam area. The bomb disposal unit of the CTTC safely neutralized the crude bombs at the Golar Tek ground in the afternoon.
