The Doc Producing South event took place in New Delhi, India, spanning five days from September 1 to 5. The gathering convened independent filmmakers to delve into topics such as documentary budgets, distribution strategies, and script development.
Participants hailed from various regions including India, Nepal, Bhutan, France, the United States, and several European nations. Among them was Arifur Rahman Arif, a filmmaker-producer representing Bangladesh’s Goopy Bagha Productions.
Arifur Rahman described the program as a platform tailored to aid South Asian independent filmmakers through specialized training and workshops focusing on project proposals, budgeting, and distribution strategies for documentary films.
“This initiative is a collaborative effort involving filmmakers and producers from diverse countries,” Arif elaborated. “My invitation from Bangladesh facilitated valuable exchanges with fellow South Asian filmmakers. I anticipate that this endeavor will forge new avenues for independent filmmakers within the region.”
The event also featured renowned Bollywood filmmaker and producer Kiran Rao, acclaimed for works such as “Dhobi Ghat” and “Laapataa Ladies.” Arifur Rahman disclosed engaging in in-depth conversations with Rao, who showcased enthusiasm for engaging with Bangladeshi cinema.
“Kiran Rao has pledged distribution support for independent films from Bangladesh and other South Asian nations,” Arif shared. “Our discussions also revolved around potential collaborative projects, which I will unveil upon finalization. Her expressed interest in visiting Bangladesh instills optimism for advancements within our film industry.”
