Pakistan’s hopes of advancing in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 came to an end as they faced a crushing 150-run defeat against South Africa in Colombo. This loss marked Pakistan’s fourth consecutive defeat in the tournament, sealing their elimination.
After being put into bat, South Africa overcame an early setback to achieve a formidable total of 312 for nine, setting a new record for the team’s highest score in World Cup history. Following a rain interruption, the target for Pakistan was revised to 243 in 20 overs as per the DLS method. Unfortunately, Pakistan struggled to build any momentum and could only manage 83 for seven in their allotted overs.
Captain Laura Wolvaardt led the charge for South Africa with a brilliant innings of 90 runs, well supported by Sune Luus (61) and Marizanne Kapp (68*), who contributed crucial runs and partnerships. Nadine de Klerk’s quick cameo towards the end propelled the Proteas past the 300-run mark, with their innings featuring 11 sixes, the highest by any team in the tournament so far.
Pakistan’s bowling effort saw Nashra Sandhu (3/45) and Sadia Iqbal (3/63) standing out, with Fatima Sana also claiming a wicket. With Australia, England, and South Africa securing their spots in the semifinals and Pakistan and Bangladesh out of the race, the competition for the remaining last-four berth is now between New Zealand and the co-hosts, India and Sri Lanka.
