Gold and silver jewelry along with cash were stolen from a historic Kali Temple in the Sadarghat area of Chattogram city overnight. The theft was detected at 7:00 am this morning, as per the police report.
Officer-in-charge Abdul Karim from Kotwali Police Station mentioned the lack of CCTV cameras at the site, making it challenging to identify the perpetrators during their visit to the scene. Following the incident, the temple authorities lodged a formal complaint.
“We have apprehended one individual involved in the theft and recovered some of the stolen gold from his possession. Our efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and retrieve the rest of the stolen valuables,” said the OC.
Sana Bhattacharjee, the temple’s caretaker, detailed the stolen items, including a gold crown, a silver crown, earrings, a two-bhori gold locket with a chain, a four-bhori silver skull garland, and a four-ana small gold locket. The thieves also accessed the donation box, stealing an estimated sum of Tk 60,000 to Tk 70,000 in cash donated by worshippers, as reported by The Daily Star.
Bhattacharjee speculated that the thieves gained entry by climbing onto the roof of a room adjacent to the temple and breaking through a ventilator, as the main door was secured at the time of the incident.
