Following a violent incident at the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) rally in Gopalganj, allegedly perpetrated by supporters of the deposed Awami League regime, we express strong disapproval of the actions that led to the loss of at least four lives during clashes with security forces. The eruption of violence, initiated by Awami League activists, raises concerns about the proportionality of the security forces’ response, particularly the swift use of lethal force. Despite the removal of the Awami League government, we anticipated that security personnel would exercise restraint in using deadly force, reserving it for exceptional circumstances. It is commendable that Nahid Islam, the NCP convener, has denounced the deployment of lethal measures, underscoring a principled stance.
Reports indicate escalating tensions in Gopalganj since Wednesday morning when armed Awami League supporters barricaded the Gopalganj-Tekerhat road in the Ulpur area of Sadar upazila, obstructing traffic by felling trees. Additionally, they vandalized the NCP rally venue, targeting NCP leaders and activists for physical harm. The ban on all political activities of the Awami League, coupled with mounting evidence linking the party to criminal activities during the recent unrest in July, underscores the disquieting recurrence of violent episodes instigated by its supporters.
The handling of such violent incidents serves as a barometer of a nation’s values and capabilities, and the events in Gopalganj reflect poorly on us. The longstanding practice of attacking rival political gatherings remains a significant impediment to nurturing democracy in our country, necessitating urgent remedial action. It is imperative for all political entities to acknowledge the severity of the crime committed by Awami League loyalists and commit to eschewing similar transgressions in the future. These reprehensible acts not only tarnish the nation’s reputation but also instill fear among the populace, as evidenced by the indefinite curfew imposed in Gopalganj by the authorities.
In response to these developments, the government has detained at least 25 individuals and bolstered law enforcement presence to forestall further disturbances. A committee has been established to probe the events of July 16, with an emphasis on transparency and ensuring accountability for the casualties. Those accountable for the assault on the NCP must face legal repercussions, as must those accountable for the loss of lives.
Acknowledging prior intelligence regarding potential unrest in Gopalganj, the home affairs adviser disclosed that security measures were not adequately fortified to anticipate the extent of the ensuing violence. This oversight necessitates a thorough governmental inquiry to ascertain the reasons behind the lapse in security protocols.
