“Transparency International Bangladesh Promotes Youth Debate for Good Governance”

-

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, the executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), highlighted the absence of tolerance, compassion, and respect for diverse viewpoints in the country’s political culture. Speaking at the launch of the Inter-University Anti-Corruption Debate Competition 2025, he emphasized the importance of these values in fostering healthy debate.

Debate, according to Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, promotes virtues such as honesty, justice, and equality for all individuals regardless of differences. He noted the significance of listening to others, presenting arguments thoughtfully, and the lack of these principles in society, government, and politics. Upholding these values, especially among the youth, is crucial for advancing good governance and progress.

The competition, part of TIB’s anti-corruption campaign, aims to inspire the youth to combat corruption actively. Dr. Iftekharuzzaman stressed the need for women’s participation by making it mandatory for each team and judging panel to include at least one female member. He emphasized that empowering women through equal engagement in decision-making is essential for societal progress.

The three-day event, hosted at the CCDB Hope Center in Savar, has attracted 32 debating teams from various universities nationwide, as per a TIB press release. Prizes include Tk 50,000 for the champion team, Tk 30,000 for the runner-up, and Tk 10,000 for the best debater. The top eight teams will secure direct qualification for next year’s competition.
