Photographer and activist Shahidul Alam, the sole Bangladeshi on board the Freedom Flotilla heading to Gaza, emphasized that their mission aims to challenge what he described as an “illegal blockade” and show support for journalists and health workers facing adversity. In an exclusive video interview with The Daily Star from the main vessel, Conscience, of the Media Flotilla, Alam emphasized that their objective is to shed light on the blockade and ensure the truth is communicated globally.
Organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the flotilla consists of a main boat and 10 smaller vessels carrying journalists, medical professionals, and humanitarian workers. As of yesterday morning, the flotilla was approximately 370 nautical miles away from Gaza. Despite the possibility of reaching Gaza sooner by maintaining full speed, Alam explained that they opted to stay together to support the slower smaller ships.
Alam expressed that the critical moment will be when they approach the danger zone, about 200 nautical miles away, where Israeli interference typically begins. While anticipating potential obstructions from Israeli forces before reaching Gaza, Alam affirmed that the team is prepared for any scenario, having conducted thorough background checks on all individuals on board.
With robust legal support from lawyers in Palestine and worldwide, the flotilla is well-equipped to handle any challenges, including cyber-security measures and contingency plans. Alam confirmed that food supplies are sufficient, and efforts have been made to ensure they do not strain Gaza’s resources.
Most participants are journalists and health workers, groups that have been targeted by Israel, according to Alam. He emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity with these professionals to ensure accurate information is disseminated from Gaza. Despite facing challenging sea conditions, including severe storms, Alam remained optimistic about the journey.
Expressing gratitude for the support from Bangladesh, Alam highlighted the unity and resilience of the Bangladeshi people against injustice. Notable figures in Bangladesh, including Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, have praised Alam for his commitment to the cause, emphasizing his unwavering dedication to human rights and justice.
