“Tragedy at Milestone College: Healing the Young Survivors”

-

On the morning of July 21, a tragic incident unfolded at Milestone College, turning what was expected to be an ordinary day into a nightmare for many families, particularly the students. A training jet from the Bangladesh Air Force crashed into the campus, resulting in the loss of 34 lives and leaving 13 others, predominantly children, fighting for survival in intensive care units.

The aftermath of the accident revealed that the impact extended beyond physical destruction. While the bodies will be laid to rest and the wreckage cleared, the emotional scars run deep, especially for the surviving children. The crash not only damaged the school physically but also emotionally, disrupting childhoods, fracturing friendships, and leaving the entire school community traumatized.

The tragic event struck a third-grade classroom, where children as young as eight or nine years old were present. Some of these young souls perished, while others may struggle to fully recover from the trauma inflicted on that fateful morning.

One student, Abdullah Al Fahad, vividly recounted the harrowing moment. He and his friends had glimpsed the circling plane after lunch, only to witness the sudden loss of two friends within seconds. Reflecting on the incident, Abdullah lamented, “We had just seen the plane. Moments later, it killed my friends. I only made it back to my parents by the mercy of the almighty.”

In the aftermath, distressing images and videos circulated on social media, depicting the raw and devastating reality of the tragedy. Children with burns, scattered charred backpacks, and sobbing students in uniform painted a grim picture of the chaos that ensued. These visuals weren’t mere images for the Milestone children; they were haunting memories replayed relentlessly on screens, making escape from the trauma nearly impossible.

Furthermore, amidst the crisis, media coverage, while crucial, bordered on exploitation, broadcasting distressing footage and chasing after grieving parents for soundbites. Such sensationalism may exacerbate the trauma for survivors and grieving families, emphasizing the need for journalists to prioritize empathy over sensationalism, especially when vulnerable audiences are involved.

The psychological toll on the young survivors is profound, with potential long-term effects such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression looming. Immediate and sustained emotional support is crucial for these children, surpassing the mere resumption of classes to ensure their well-being for years to come.

In addition to coping with the tragedy itself, misinformation quickly spread online post-crash, causing further distress. False information, unverified content, and misidentified victims added to the chaos, intensifying panic and confusion among parents and survivors.

Recovery from such devastation necessitates collective responsibility, with media outlets reporting responsibly, individuals pausing before sharing unverified information, and authorities prioritizing trauma counseling alongside medical assistance. Schools must not only be physically safe but also provide emotional support for the students.

Listening to the voices of the children is paramount, recognizing that grief does not adhere to a schedule. Every individual’s response is valid, and they must feel supported and not alone in their journey to healing. Teachers, parents, policymakers, and the community at large all play a crucial role in aiding these children as they begin the challenging process of rebuilding their shattered lives.

While the scars of that tragic day may never fully fade, acknowledging the depth of their pain, resisting hastened healing, and offering unwavering support are essential steps in accompanying the students of Milestone on their path to recovery.
