“Bangladesh Fails to Mark Tajuddin Ahmad’s Birth Centenary”

-

Tajuddin Ahmad was a remarkable leader known for his dedication to the underprivileged, frugal values, discipline, focus, selflessness, determination, and fearlessness. These qualities set him apart as a rare leader globally, especially in Bangladesh, where politicians prioritizing moral values and national interests are scarce.

Unfortunately, the lack of national-level celebrations for Tajuddin Ahmad’s birth centenary by various civic, intellectual, and academic entities reflects a disregard for history, a failure to honor heroes, and intellectual timidity prevailing in society.

The pivotal decisions by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Tajuddin Ahmad in 1971 marked a significant turning point in Bangladesh’s history. Tajuddin transitioned from being Bangabandhu’s deputy to leading the nation with courage, patriotism, and exceptional leadership during the independence struggle.

His journey from a party organizer to de facto commander-in-chief showcased his adaptability, strength, and vision in facing unprecedented challenges. Tajuddin’s ability to mobilize the nation and seek international support was crucial for the independence movement’s success.

Tajuddin’s leadership was evident in his strategic negotiations with India to sustain the supply of arms and ammunition for the freedom fighters. He also initiated unity among political parties supporting the liberation struggle and planned for post-war reconstruction and rehabilitation.

As Tajuddin Ahmad’s birth centenary is commemorated, it raises questions about why his legacy has been overlooked. The neglect of his contributions stems from the distortion of Liberation War history in narratives influenced by changing regimes and partisan interests.

Reflecting on the importance of preserving authentic history, it is essential to honor figures like Tajuddin Ahmad who played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s identity and securing independence. Embracing fact-based narratives can help rebuild a truthful and inclusive national history.

Mahfuz Anam, the editor and publisher of The Daily Star, emphasizes the significance of acknowledging and learning from historical truths to guide the nation towards a more informed and united future.
