“BNP Secretary General Urges Timely Referendum for February 2026 Election”

-

BNP’s Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, expressed disappointment over the interim government’s actions regarding the July charter, accusing them of attempting to delay the national election. Fakhrul emphasized that any referendum should coincide with the election day in February 2026 to ensure public acceptance. He made these remarks during a rally at the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan, commemorating “National Revolution and Solidarity Day.”

The event witnessed a large turnout, with leaders and activists from various BNP units participating, stretching from Kakrail to Motijheel. Eight political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, have called for a referendum by November to validate the July Charter. Fakhrul reiterated BNP’s stance that the referendum should align with the national polls.

Fakhrul criticized the Consensus Commission for introducing new proposals post-signing the charter, alleging discrepancies from the agreed points. The Law Adviser urged political parties to reach a unified decision promptly on the referendum and charter implementation.

BNP affirmed its participation in the upcoming election, with Fakhrul rallying the youth to honor past sacrifices and strive for victory. Meanwhile, Mirza Abbas accused Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami of undermining the country’s sovereignty and independence.

Following the rally, BNP members from Dhaka south and north units held a procession, culminating at the Sonargaon Hotel intersection. Fakhrul warned against threats to democracy and highlighted the significance of the civil-military uprising of November 7, 1975.

Similar events took place nationwide to mark the occasion.
