Australia’s fast bowler, Pat Cummins, will miss the first Ashes Test in Perth next month due to a lower-back issue, Cricket Australia confirmed on Monday. Steve Smith will step in as captain in Cummins’ absence. Cummins, who has been sidelined since July, was already doubtful for the series opener against England on November 21.
Coach Andrew McDonald mentioned that Cummins has started running again and is expected to resume bowling this week, raising hopes for his participation in the second Test in Brisbane on December 4. McDonald expressed optimism for Cummins’ return, despite the timing constraints.
Cummins has been a key player for Australia in Ashes contests since his debut in the 2017-18 series. While losing Cummins for the first Test is less than ideal, McDonald stated that preparations have been made to fill the void. Scott Boland is likely to replace Cummins in the bowling lineup alongside Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.
Boland, known for his effectiveness on Australian pitches, has a strong record in Test cricket, averaging 16.53 with 62 wickets in 14 matches. McDonald praised Boland’s potential as a replacement and highlighted the anticipation of Cummins’ eventual return to the squad.
After being relieved of captaincy in 2018, Steve Smith has led the team in Cummins’ absence on several occasions. McDonald emphasized the synergy between Smith and Cummins, underscoring their partnership. The selectors are also contemplating a test comeback for Mitch Marsh, who has been in good form in white-ball cricket.
McDonald hinted at the possibility of Marsh’s inclusion in the Test squad if deemed beneficial, signaling ongoing support for Marsh’s Test career despite his recent focus on limited-overs cricket.
