Activists Detained on Gaza Aid Mission, Facing Injustice

-

Nearly 300 journalists and media workers have lost their lives in what is now considered the most dangerous area for journalists. Bangladeshi writer and photojournalist Shahidul Alam and activist-health expert Ruhi Akhter embarked on a journey with a flotilla to provide aid to the Gaza Strip. Reports indicate that Shahidul Alam and other activists were detained upon entering the red zone, approximately 220 km away from Gaza’s coastline.

Over the past two years, the occupation has claimed the lives of nearly 10% of the Palestinian population. The entire population is facing severe food insecurity at a Phase 5 level, resulting in the deaths of at least 459 individuals, including 154 children, due to starvation. Although the aid ships carry around $110,000 worth of relief supplies, it is deemed insufficient. The mission of the voyagers is not only to deliver aid in the midst of widespread devastation but also to assert that Palestinians are not forgotten and challenge the silence of world leaders.

In a similar incident, a previous flotilla, which included activist Greta Thunberg among others, was intercepted by Israeli forces, leading to the detention of its members. Witnesses reported that they were held captive and subjected to inhumane treatment by the soldiers. Despite two years passing since then, the situation remains largely unchanged, with Israel violating international law and obstructing civilian-led initiatives aimed at providing aid to a starving population.

On the second anniversary, Drik organized a gathering of artists from various disciplines to raise their voices and offer prayers against the injustices in Palestine. These artists have long been vocal against all forms of oppression, both domestically and internationally. Drik’s solidarity with Palestine predates October 7, with a Palestinian flag and poster visibly displayed at the entrance, symbolizing their unwavering commitment to standing against injustice.

During the event, attendees were invited to participate in an interactive activity where they could stamp pre-handmade boats resembling ships approaching Gaza, alongside inscribing slogans expressing solidarity and prayers for a Free Palestine. The program featured a diverse group of artists showcasing their work in various mediums. Noteworthy performances included a moving rendition of “My Name Is Palestine” by Shayan, which left the audience captivated, as well as symbolic art creations by painters Jannatul Islam Bipa and Suman Halder.

The evening continued with singer and columnist Fakir Arup Rahee presenting a reading from his book, followed by poet Munimah Mahreen reciting her poem “Conscience of the World,” previously recited by Shahidul Alam during the flotilla. The event highlighted the courage of those who embarked on the ship to Gaza.

The performances extended beyond the Palestinian cause, delving into broader themes of oppression and environmental crises. Artists like Muiz Mahfuz and Suchi Marma used their art to address issues of pollution, climate change, and indigenous rights, underscoring the interconnectedness of various forms of oppression and the importance of speaking out against them.

The evening concluded with a silent drama performance by Samageet depicting the plight of children in Gaza, starkly illustrating the impact of conflict on innocent lives. The event served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom in Palestine, with attendees of all ages donning Keffiyehs and expressing solidarity through art and music.

Despite challenges and obstacles, the event showcased the resilience and determination of those fighting for justice and freedom. Through art, music, and shared expressions of solidarity, the message was clear: Palestine will not be forgotten, and the fight for justice continues unabated.
