Israel’s Deadly Airstrikes Kill 23 Palestinian Aid Seekers

-

Israel’s ongoing airstrikes in Gaza have caused the deaths of 23 Palestinian aid seekers on July 31. Al Jazeera reported that a day earlier, Israeli attacks claimed the lives of 71 Palestinians who were trying to access humanitarian aid in the midst of a worsening hunger crisis in Gaza. A single strike near the Zikim crossing point resulted in the deaths of 51 individuals and left over 648 others injured as they sought assistance from incoming trucks in northern Gaza. Additionally, in southern Gaza, 20 aid seekers lost their lives near the Morag Corridor, close to Khan Younis.

Israel’s deliberate restriction of aid entry into Gaza, coupled with the targeting of aid seekers and the transformation of distribution sites into deadly zones, has led to severe consequences. Palestinians, facing starvation and desperation, likened the situation to a grim version of “The Hunger Games” imposed by Israel. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has declared Gaza to be in “the worst-case scenario of famine,” with children bearing the brunt of the crisis. Since April, over 20,000 children have been admitted to Gaza hospitals due to acute malnutrition.

The lack of condemnation and the backing Israel receives from Western allies despite these atrocities have been disheartening. However, global outcry, including from millions of ordinary citizens in the West, could potentially stop the massacre. Pressure mounted by countries like France, the UK, and Canada, long-time supporters of Israel, is a positive development. France, along with 14 other nations, has expressed interest in recognizing the State of Palestine. The British and Canadian prime ministers have also signaled intentions to do the same in September unless Israel takes significant actions, including agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza.

While these actions are belated, they offer a glimmer of hope. The international community must seize this moment to compel Israel to halt its deadly campaign before it escalates further. It is imperative for conscientious citizens and governments worldwide to use this opportunity to advocate for a resolution through a two-state solution, contingent on recognizing the State of Palestine.
